Shaharzad Akbar
As the Taliban was approaching Kabul, Akbar fled Afghanistan on the last commercial flight in August 2021. In her current role as the Executive Director of Rawadari, a nonprofit organization working on human rights issues related to Afghanistan, Akbar continues to focus on rebuilding the country’s human rights movement.

Dmitry Bykov
Dmitry Bykov left Russia in 2022 after a poisoning attempt and years of Russian government clamping down on his writing and broadcasting work. He has taught at Cornell University in New York state for the 2022/23 academic year and is currently at the University of Rochester, specializing in literature courses focused on prison and exile in Russia and Gogol’s creation of the Ukrainian national mythology.

Felix Kaputu
Wrongly accused of plotting to overthrow his country’s government and facing from 30 years to a death sentence, Kaputu left his home country of Democratic Republic of Congo. Now he serves as a Visiting Faculty in Literary Studies and Social Studies at Bard College Simon’s Rock in Massachusetts.
