Humanities for the People: a Writing Retreat to Advance the Relevance and Reach of Social and Cultural Study
During July 6-16, 2023 OSUN's Hannah Arendt Humanities Network, in partnership with Universidad de los Andes, will host a writing retreat at the Gladstone Library, Wales, UK for scholars interested in advancing the relevance and reach of social and cultural study. The retreat is open to all students, faculty, and staff affiliated with an OSUN member institution.
The goal of “Humanities for the People: a Writing Retreat to Advance the Relevance and Reach of Social and Cultural Study," is to provide time and space for a group of writers to engage in focused and sustained writing on topics that are relevant to humans beyond those currently interested in the humanities. Writers should, therefore, be working on topics of universal relevance.
The writing retreat is envisioned as a first step in the constitution of a group of scholars whose research and publication practice will prioritize the people: people as they actually are—decent, reality-based, practical, humanitarian individuals as opposed to niche academics. The hosts of the retreat hope that the group will develop projects to establish and extend its influence in and beyond the humanities within the framework of the Hannah Arendt Humanities Network and OSUN.
Selected scholars (undergraduate and graduate students and faculty) will practice Karl Popper's principles of “free criticism" and the attempt to “speak one and the same language." In keeping with the idea of open society, conflict will be centered as a constructive framework. As Judith Shklar once asked, “What on earth is so impressive about agreement and unity?” The retreat's method is its most important goal: free and public inter-subjective criticism that generates more grounded, representative, and relevant work.
Successful applicants will be invited to spend ten nights at Gladstone Library, Wales in order to think, write, and be in community with other writers who are focusing on similar themes. During the retreat it is expected that those invited will spend the majority of their time writing, with group discussions (including “friendly-hostile criticism”) of ongoing work in the evenings.
Air tickets, single rooms, and board will be courtesy of the Hannah Arendt Humanities Network.
To apply, please send a CV and a focused 1-2 page description of the writing project you will be working on while at the retreat, stating also how you think it aligns with the project of humanities for the people, to Gregory Lobo.
