Hannah Arendt Humanities Network
The Plurality Forum on Socialized or Private Healthcare
Should healthcare and insurance be nationalized, privatized, or a mix of both? The OSUN Hannah Arendt Humanities Network and the Mercatus Center invite applications to participate in a forum at George Mason University with undergraduate and graduate students with diverse viewpoints to discuss their perspectives on healthcare policy.Should healthcare be nationalized, privatized, a mix of both? Do private firms, civil society organizations, or government agencies better provide and regulate health insurance, care, and research? What mix would be optimal in the context of the United States, and how did we reach the current status quo? In today’s politically polarized society, it is more important than ever to aim to understand those with whom we disagree.
During the event, students will engage with the speakers and other students during panel discussions, large and small group sessions, and reading and writing exercises with the aim to understand a diverse set of viewpoints while engaging in respectful dialogue across political and ideological divides.
The forum is part of the Hannah Arendt Network Plurality Forum and the Mercatus Center's Pluralist Lab, an effort to foster open-mindedness while actively demonstrating how we can exchange ideas and coexist with our fellow citizens across deep divides. The Pluralist Lab hosts forums like this one to encourage experimentation and development of new tools for improving civil discourse in professional and everyday life.
