Call for Papers: OSUN Summit on Mobility & Immobility
As of 2022, over 100 million people had been displaced from their homes and forced to migrate due to crisis, political conflict, war, and climate. Experts anticipate that this number will increase exponentially, especially with global climate change impacting previously unaffected regions and countries.Across OSUN, students, faculty, and researchers are impacted by forced migration and displacement, presenting a unique opportunity for network scholars to delve into questions, identify shared and disparate challenges, and design solutions. Thinking through mobility and immobility in the 21st century brings us to investigating the circumstances of crises and the conditions of our connectivity.
Co-hosted by the OSUN Civic Engagement Initiative, The OSUN Hubs for Connected Learning Initiatives, and the Bard High School Early Colleges (BHSEC), the OSUN Summit on Mobility & Immobility on October 2-6, 2023 will be key to OSUN’s broader work in the lead-up to the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) in December 2023. While the GRF employs the term “refugee,” the Forum includes all populations affected by forced migration and the Summit will grapple with questions related to mobility/immobility more broadly. The Summit will also foreground student leadership in the area of forced migration study and community engagement.
Summit organizers seek proposals from OSUN faculty and students who are engaged in work related to displacement, forced migration, and mobility/immobility more broadly. Formal research papers, action-oriented projects, participatory action research, and artistic representations are all welcome, as are proposals for full panels and individual proposals. Proposals should be no more than one page and should be accompanied by presenter bios.
The Summit will consist of a series of research- and action-oriented panels on (im)mobility, workshops on civic action and coalition building, the launch of the OSUN Student Voices for Refugees network, and a research showcase.
The Summit will take place in English at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya and BHSEC Bronx in New York City. There will be in-person work between students and faculty in both locations, as well as the use of synchronous discussions and varied technologies.
