Global Observatory on Academic Freedom
Call for Essays: Reimagining Academic Freedom
The OSUN Global Observatory on Academic Freedom (GOAF) welcomes all undergraduate and graduate students attending an OSUN institution to submit their essays for a competition on the topic of “Reimagining Academic Freedom."
GOAF conducts rigorous, innovative and pertinent scientific research responding to the urgent need for rethinking the concept of academic freedom, a concept currently in crisis as evidenced throughout the world. New times pose new challenges, theoretical as much as empirical, and GOAF seeks to stimulate the debate and reflect upon possible ways to preserve academic freedom and democratic societies.
GOAF wants to provide an opportunity for students to engage in this endeavor by contributing to a reflection on the global re-conceptualization of academic freedom—one that draws on a diverse set of disciplinary approaches, regional outlooks, and epistemological understandings. We especially welcome interdisciplinary work and innovative theoretical contributions.
Essays should be up to 4,000 words in English language and no previously published works will be accepted. Submitted essays will undergo double blind evaluation, based on the originality, clarity, and argumentation of the essays, by the respected members of GOAF's Advisory Board and Postdoctoral Fellows.
GOAF will choose three winning essays and awarded students will be notified by November 1, 2022. GOAF will publish the announcement on our
webpage
and inform the winning authors by email. The winning essays will be published on GOAF’s webpage and the first three winning essays’ authors will be eligible for a small research grant from GOAF (up to $1500,00) for research, advocacy and dissemination activities that fit their research interests. All three winners will be invited to join GOAF’s Research Network on Academic Freedom and actively participate in all future GOAF’s events.
