Student Opportunity: Apply for CEU Budapest/OSUN Doctoral & Postdoc Fellowships

CEU Budapest-OSUN Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships provide an opportunity for up to 8 doctoral students and 6 junior scholars within 7 years of their PhD defense to spend between 4 and 12 months, respectively, in Budapest at the CEU Democracy Institute (DI) or the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives (Blinken OSA). The doctoral students need to be affiliated with an OSUN institution at the time of application. The same requirement does not apply to post-doctoral scholars. 

Fellows will work on individual research projects, which fit within the interdisciplinary research activities carried out at CEU DI and OSA and contribute to the intellectual life of their host institution. In addition, fellows are expected to work towards strengthening inter-institutional cooperation between DI and OSA and OSUN-affiliated higher education institutions, especially those in the Global South.

Fellows may identify colleagues from any of the OSUN institutions they wish to collaborate with, or may propose initiatives for inter-institutional research, higher education projects ranging from joint research or curriculum development and the organization of summer schools to workshops and conferences, as well as online and/or offline teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within OSUN institutions. Preference will be given to applicants who have already demonstrated involvement with relevant local and/or global civic initiatives.

The fellowships require residence in Budapest for the duration of the grant.

Applicants should send their complete application material in a single file to Lilla Jakobs at CEU Democracy Institute with “CEU Budapest-OSUN Postdoc Fellowship” or “CEU Budapest-OSUN Doctoral Fellowship” in the subject of the email. Applications will be evaluated by a Selection Panel consisting of the two co-directors of the CEU Democracy Institute and two senior researchers from CEU DI and OSA.

The Fellowship is structured in two tracks:

The CEU Budapest-OSUN Doctoral Fellowship is open to PhD candidates currently enrolled in a doctoral program in a relevant social science discipline in an OSUN-affiliated higher education institution.

The CEU Budapest-OSUN Postdoctoral Fellowship is open globally to junior scholars up to 7 years after their thesis defence who can demonstrate a strong complementarity between their current research project and ongoing research activities carried out at CEU DI or OSA.
  • Both types of fellowships can begin on 1 April 2022 at the earliest but no later than 1 August 2022. It is advised that longer-term fellowships start as early as possible, close to the 1 April 2022 start date. 
  • CEU Budapest-OSUN Doctoral Fellowship recipients can expect a research grant in a range of 1,500 – 2,000 USD per month
  • CEU Budapest-OSUN Post-doctoral Fellowship recipients can expect a research grant in a range of 2,700 – 3,200 USD per month.
  • These research grants are meant to provide full coverage for the scope of the research activity itself, travel to and from Budapest, a modest subsistence, and accommodation for the full fellowship period.

The application package should comprise the following:
  • Applicant’s detailed CV with a full list of academic publications and contacts of three colleagues familiar with the candidate’s work for eventual references.
  • A cover letter of up to 1,500 words, containing a description of the research project the applicant intends to pursue in Budapest and specifying the expected duration of the fellowship (between 4 and 12 months). The cover letter should also explain (a) how the candidate will benefit from their stay at DI or OSA in Budapest in carrying out their research project, and (b) what feasible initiatives they propose to strengthen cooperation in research and education among OSUN higher education institutions, and (c) what specific working groups or research projects at DI or OSA the candidate would like to be affiliated with and why.
  • In the cover letter, information must be provided on the tentative start date of the grant. It is advised that longer-term fellowships start as  close as possible to 1 April 2022.
  • For CEU doctoral students, an approval of the application by their respective department/program is required.
