Birkbeck Summer School
Apply to Birkbeck Critical Theory Summer SchoolThe London Critical Theory Summer School (LCTSS) is now accepting applications for its 2023 session and offers a total of 30 scholarships to students at OSUN partner institutions so they can attend in person or virtually.
LCTSS will take place from June 26 - July 7, 2023 on Birkbeck's campus in central London, but may revert to either a hybrid model or a full-scale online program if the world health situation and travel-related restrictions globally require us to do so.
Organized by the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities, the internationally renowned Critical Theory Summer School enables graduate students and academics to engage in a two-week course of study with acclaimed critical thinkers. Third-year undergraduate students as well as Masters and Ph.D. students and in particular those located in the Global South across the OSUN network are also invited to apply.
OSUN applicants who are early career researchers, junior faculty, postgraduate students or in the final year of their undergraduate degree are eligible to apply for one of 10 scholarships which cover the cost of fees, travel and accommodation to attend the Summer School in person in central London. If Birkbeck needs to move the full Summer School either online or into a hybrid format due to Covid, the scholariship will be carried over to the hybrid or online program.
Birkbeck also offers 20 scholarships to cover the fees for students at OSUN partner institutions to attend a smaller virtual program. This program will run whether the full program is held in person, in a hybrid mode or online.
Testimony from Lala Darchinova, Central European University, who received an OSUN scholarship in 2022
LCTSS shed a light on unexplored topics such as psychoanalysis and political aesthetics. Being in contact with top-tier professors engaged in critical theory such as Etienne Balibar, Slavoj Zizek, Jacqueline Rose, Esther Leslie, Achille Mbembe, Costas Douzinas, Jodi Dean and many others stimulated my thinking on many questions currently bothering me. The content of the school was highly rich and timely. Amidst the war in Ukraine, when all values and principles are questioned again, topics of war, nationalism, cosmopolitics, the future of capitalism, and the meanings of freedom and liberty were necessary to discuss and think about.
