2021 Call: Critical Practice Studio in Dheisheh on “Translation”
The Critical Practice Studio (CPS), hosted by Al-Quds Bard College in Palestine, invites students and non-students from the Open Society University Network, in addition to emerging talents from Palestinian communities, to apply for a term-long residency and exhibition on "Translation" that is based in Dheisheh, Palestine. Participants develop individual or group projects hand in hand with our tutors during the summer of 2021, and position their projects for exhibition and presentation in January 2022, in Berlin. The Critical Practice Studio (CPS) is an ambitious post-disciplinary and bi-lingual intensive program conducted in both Arabic and/or English. The term-long pilot program is comprised of three sections: a reading week, a week-long hybrid residency that takes place online and in Dheisheh, Palestine, and a safe in-person exhibition of participants’ projects in Berlin in January 2022. The CPS seeks to bring together students, scholars, artists, architects and activists from a local and trans-national network of institutions and communities both in Palestine and across the globe.
Reading week (online): July 10 to July 16, 2021
Hybrid Residency and Lecture Series (in-person and/or online): July 17 to July 23, 2021
Continued Development (monthly meetings): September to December 2021
Exhibition/Presentation: January 2022
Located in Dheisheh, but reaching across seas and rivers, the CPS provides a space for critical reflections on “translation” as a question that cuts across a wide range of realms: linguistic and literal, epistemic and representational, political and social, as well as architectural and artistic.
Participants will be placed in small cluster groups of three students and one tutor each to locate, explore, and interrogate “translation” from within one of the clusters’ domains.
The hybrid residency week (in-person for participants from Palestine, and online for international participants through our e-learning and conferencing platform) from July 17 to July 23 will be structured around workshops, lectures, screenings, interviews, and roundtables providing time for individual work, exchange with tutors, conversations with community members, scholars and practitioners from Palestine and elsewhere.
We invite all individuals who are interested (students and non-students) to apply. Our call is particularly directed at, but not limited to, students from the Open Society University Network (OSUN), and to emerging talents from Palestinian communities. Participants develop individual or group projects hand in hand with our tutors during the summer of 2021, and position their projects for exhibition and presentation in January 2022, in Berlin.
