Call for Grant Proposals: Students as Content Co-Creators

Deadline Expired on December 8, 2023
OSUN faculty teaching Network Collaborative Courses and OSUN Online Courses can now submit proposals for Students as Content Co-Creators grants, which seek to increase access to and diversity of course materials, promote innovative teaching and learning practices, and enlist faculty and students to collaboratively create teaching and learning materials.

This call provides funds for faculty and students to collaboratively develop teaching and learning materials that can be used in future iterations of classes. There are two approaches to this call:

1.    Content created in the classroom: Faculty can provide students with an assignment that leads to the creation of course content that can be used in future courses. Creation will take place in a for-credit OSUN course.

2.    Content created under mentorship: Faculty can identify a student or small group of students to collaboratively develop teaching and learning materials over a select period of time. Mentorship does not have to take place in a for-credit course.

Projects can range from creating virtual art exhibits to curating a podcast series to developing audio and visual materials that offer insight into and build upon the unique perspectives of students and their communities. Materials will be made publicly accessible, with the permission of both students and faculty, in support of open education.

The benefits of using student created course content in the classroom include: experiential learning that engages students in the creation of new and original work; invites students to be a part of the teaching and learning process; moves away from single-use assignments in favor of renewable ones; and promotes student agency in deciding whether their work is publicly shared.

Examples of instructors empowering their students to create course content:
•    Develop podcasts with your students and make it accessible to the community.
•    Assign students to write an additional chapter for an open textbook.
•    Develop short documentaries that can be used in the classroom.
•    Edit or write Wikipedia pages on diverse issues.
•    Co-curation of an online art exhibit.

Proposals will be accepted for projects based in Spring or Summer 2024 and must be completed by August 31, 2024.

Proposals are welcome from all NCC and OOC faculty teaching in Spring or Summer 2024.  Faculty must engage students in the creation process.

Compensation: Based on the scope of the project proposed and will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Funds can be requested for up to $7,000 per project. Budgets should include stipends for faculty and students, and material and production costs.

Requirements: Grantees agree to meet with OSUN staff members to discuss their project, create and share a project plan, and complete brief mid-term and final reports. All materials will be licensed under a Creative Commons license and hosted in the OSUN Digital Repository. Creators will retain copyright to any materials developed and grant OSUN non-exclusive permission to use. All materials will adhere to OSUN accessibility requirements. Awardees must also agree to help collect assessment data related to student impact.

Evaluation criteria: All proposals will be reviewed by a selection committee that will take into consideration the impact on student success, impact on the OSUN community, accessibility & user experience, cultural relevance & inclusivity, and feasibility of the project.
