Call for Proposals & Papers: Dying to Be Beautiful–Body Image, Eating Behaviors, and Health in the Caribbean
Deadline: September 1, 2024
The Dying to be Beautiful Conference, convening December 6-8, 2024 at the University of the West Indies, Mona, in Jamaica, seeks submissions for presentations and workshops and the Caribbean Journal of Psychology seeks manuscripts on similar themes for publication.
THE CONFERENCE
The conference focuses on healthcare challenges and marginalized topics such as body image, colorism, excessive social media use, weight concerns, and eating behaviors faced by people in the Caribbean and by extension other similar ethnic groups and colonized nations. By bringing together an international group of healthcare providers and scholars, these healthcare challenges are viewed through a scientific lens, which are examined closely for a deeper understanding, translatable to the public. The knowledge and expertise garnered from this conference will inform policy and provide further training for those involved in the management and healthcare of our people.
Scholars are encouraged to submit original research, workshops, theoretical frameworks, literature reviews, case studies, and articles on psychology and health behaviours in the public interest. The word limit for scientific abstracts and workshops is 350 words and should include background, objectives, methods, results and conclusion.
Find workshop proposal formats here.

THE JOURNAL
Guest editors Michelle Codner, E. Thomaseo Burton, and Caryl James at the Caribbean Journal of Psychology, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, are asking presenters and other authors to submit their fully developed manuscripts for peer review and possible publication in a special issue of the Caribbean Journal of Psychology. Scholars can submit original research, theoretical frameworks, literature reviews, case studies, and pieces on psychology and health behaviors in the public interest.
The editors are interested in the following themes:
Cultural norms that define Body Image
Colorism
Eating Disorders: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Stigma
Trauma and Depression in the Caribbean population
The emotional and physical cost of food scarcity
Obesity vs Health At Every Size
Cost of beauty: Social and Economic Implications
Sports Psychology – Getting Your Head into the Game
Men and Muscularity – What is healthy vs. disordered

Physical activity and mental health
Authors must agree to transfer copyright to the Caribbean Journal of Psychology if the article is selected for publication. Manuscripts should be prepared according to the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and should be double-spaced, with a font size of 12. Literature reviews, empirical studies and pieces of interest should not exceed 10,000 words excluding references. Brief reports and book reviews should not exceed 4,000 words, excluding references. All manuscripts except book reviews should include an abstract (maximum 250 words on a separate page) and up to five key words. Manuscripts should be submitted as a Microsoft Word file, in English (British). Delete all identifying information from the manuscript to ensure a blind review process. Prepare a separate title page with author identification (name, institutional affiliation, and contact email and telephone; identify corresponding author). Author name or names should be masked wherever they appear in the manuscript. Insert the abstract on a separate page, after the title page, and before the introduction.
