Advancing the Conversation: Global Commons Releases Its Third Issue
"Fishermen catching fish" by BRAC University student Asrafun Nahar Asha, is part of the photo series "People and Places of Rural Bangladesh" included in the Spring '23 issue of Global Commons.
The OSUN
Global Commons
has launched its
Spring 2023 issue
, featuring 50 multimedia pieces by students from 12 institutions across the OSUN network, all addressing crucial social issues. While most submissions in this third issue are in English, others are in French, Arabic and Belarusian and a variety of genres are represented. 43 students submitted research, journalism, creative writing, op-eds, illustrations, and more on issues related to inequalities, human rights, arts and society, sustainability and climate, global justice, global public health, and liberal arts and sciences. Published bi-annually, the online, student-produced and edited publication gives students a place to establish themselves as authors, creators, and leaders who want to speak to the pressing local and global challenges they encounter.

Laliza Umatova
, a student at American University of Central Asia, who contributed the feature story
“Girls Breaking Professional Gender Stereotypes In Kyrgyzstan,”
says publication in Global Commons “means allowing my heroines to speak out and be heard. I think my material is important because it talks about the problems of many societies that have been around for many years,” she adds.
Saif Mahmood Mahim
, a student at BRAC University who wrote the research essay
"Envisaging the Future Prospects of the Rohingya in Bangladesh and Myanmar,"
says he is both excited and honored that Global Commons has published him for the first time. “Global Commons has assisted in my personal development as a researcher and has advanced the conversation about the situation of the Rohingya people. I'm incredibly glad for this chance, and I hope that by sharing my perspectives, I will encourage others to have deliberative conversations and help develop long-term solutions for the Rohingya community,” he says.
Usman Mohammad Fahad,
a student at the American University of Beirut, says that publication in Global Commons is a means for providing insightful research that fosters inclusion. Fahad wrote two pieces on public health:
"Disability and Unemployment: An Overview of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Concerns of Employers in Lebanon’s National Context"
and
"Towards Health Justice: The Effects of Lebanon's Economic Crisis on Health Inequality and the Role of Civic Engagement."
“I believe that open access to information is essential for creating a more just and equitable world, and I'm proud to be a part of the Global Commons community,” he adds.
A global online publication that is freely accessible to all OSUN students, Global Commons aims to provide a vast domain of research essays, short fiction, narrative journalism and creative projects, encouraging students on any of OSUN’s 45 campuses to experiment with their creative and non-creative projects. OSUN congratulates everyone who contributed to Global Commons, as well as the Global Commons Editorial Team, as they continue to do the hard work of building a space for students to have their civically engaged voices heard. Stay tuned for the Fall 2023 call for submissions.
