Russia Paradox: Intellectual History of the Russian Empire(s)

This course explores the contradictions and myths associated with the Russian Empire in its pre-Soviet and Soviet periods It uses intellectual history as a prism through which to explore challenges and contradictions of the notion of empire, and the implications of ideological hegemony and practices such as Russification within multi-ethnic and multi-cultural states. The course concludes with an exploration of the uses and abuses of historical memory in the Soviet and Putin eras, and examines how the Putin regime is the heir of the Soviet state in terms of its ideologies, institutions, and international aggressions.
