The course offers an overview of the most important literature and art produced in the Soviet Union from the 1917 Revolution until the country’s dissolution in 1991. We shall read Mayakovsky, Babel, Platonov, Aitmatov, Shalamov, Bulgakov, Yerofeyev and examine the artwork of Malevich, Kandinsky, Shagal, Eisenstein, Chuikov, Aitiev, and Tarkovsky. Particular attention will be devoted to the literature and art of and about Soviet Central Asia.
Prerequisites: First Year Seminar or an equivalent freshman liberal arts course.
