The course offers an overview of the most important literature and art produced in the Soviet Union from the 1917 Revolution until the country’s dissolution in 1991. We will read Mayakovsky, Akhmatova, Mandelshtam, Babel, Shalamov, Bulgakov, Yerofeyev, and others. We will examine the art of Malevich, Kandinsky, Eisenstein, Chuikov, Aytiev, Tarkovsky, and others.
Prerequisites: First Year Seminar and/or English Composition or an equivalent freshman course.
Credits: 3 US / 6 ECTS
