Workshop in Spatial Analysis for the Social Sciences

Thursday, November 10, 2022
8:30 am – 11:00 am EST/GMT-5
Online Event

8:30 AM New York l 2:30 PM Vienna

In this workshop offered by the Economic Democracy Initiative, participants from across OSUN are invited to learn to use ESRI ArcGIS online mapping software and receive a formal introduction to the fundamentals of geographic information systems (GIS) and conducting spatial analysis. Students will learn how GIS can be used as a tool for assessing social, economic, and environmental justice issues at the local, regional, and global scale.

Spatial data analysis can be used to reveal information previously hidden from plain sight. Using geographic information systems, policy issues can be addressed hands-on with real world data.

Learning Outcomes:
  • An introduction to the capabilities of GIS science and its limitations
  • Develop an appreciation of how spatial analysis can play a critical role in the creation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of social, economic, and environmental policy issues
GIS has been available since the early 1990s, quickly becoming ubiquitous and branching off into overlapping fields such as geomatics, geovisualization, geoinformatics, and geocomputation. With roots in cartography and spatial analysis or statistics, the rise of GIS can be attributed to the advent of personal computers, GPS technologies, and greater computational power.
