Bruce Matthews
Bard Early CollegesBruce Matthews is a founding member of the Bard High School Early College Faculty. He has taught at Bard College as a Faculty Fellow, in The Clemente Program in New York City, and, through two Senior Fulbright Faculty Awards, has been Visiting Faculty at The University of Tübingen and The University of Freiburg. His field of research is German Idealism and Romanticism, focusing on the work of the philosopher F.W.J. Schelling (1775-1854). He has lectured extensively in the United States and in Europe, as well as in Turkey and India. Recent publications include “Ecstatic Ontology: Schelling and the Erotics of the Earth” (2022), and “The New Mythology: Between Romanticism and Humanism,” in The Relevance of Romanticism (Cambridge University Press, 2014). Books include F.W.J. Schelling’s Berlin Lectures: the Grounding of Positive Philosophy (SUNY Press 2007), Schelling’s Organic Form of Philosophy: Life as the Schema of Freedom (SUNY 2011).
