“I am a citizen of the world,” said the Greek philosopher Diogenes. The idea of “global citizenship” has a complex history and urgent relevance. This course explores tensions between the particularity of membership in a given community and the universality that characterizes the human condition. We examine the relationship between citizens’ rights and human rights and, in general, the political, ethical, and psychological implications of global citizenship from antiquity through to today.
