June 29-July 10: Supervised team research meetings: TBD
3 credits for undergraduates; no credit graduate workshop
This workshop-seminar will introduce advanced undergraduates and graduate students to the basic elements and issues of open source investigations for human rights: investigations that use social media and other publicly-available, internet-based sources to develop evidence for advocacy and legal accountability. The class will cover the following topics: 1) the history and context of open source investigation, 2) its relationship to other types of human rights investigations, 3) foundational methods for conducting open source investigations (including the basics of reverse image searching, geolocation, chronolocation, source analysis), 4) how to conduct a digital landscape analysis, 5) ethical considerations, and 6) basic principles of physical, digital and psycho-social security related to online investigations. Students will conclude the course with a list of resources for further reading and activities to strengthen their skills related to open source investigations. In the second two weeks of the course students will work on supervised team research projects using the methods developed in the workshop.
The core text for the class is Sam Dubberly, Alexa Koenig, and Daragh Murray, eds, Digital Witness: Using Open Source Information for Human Rights Investigation, Documentation, and Accountability (2019).
· Available only to advanced undergraduates and graduate students.
