Open Society Research Platform
Doctoral Research Fellowship with the Open Society Research Platform
Application deadline:
30 November 2020 (open until filled)
Starting date:
January 2021
Central European University’s Open Society Research Platform (OSRP) invites applications for a one-year doctoral research fellowship. OSRP is hosted by CEU’s
Yehuda Elkana Center for Higher Education
(YECHE) and is a new project associated with the
Open Society University Network (OSUN)
, of which CEU is a co-founder and core member. OSRP aims to contribute to revitalizing the debate on the concept of open society; testing its theoretical, epistemological, and methodological utility; and inspiring rigorous, collaborative and critically nuanced scholarly contributions that consider the place of the values and principles of open society in scholarship, politics, media and public discourse and, in this way, are relevant for understanding and addressing contemporary challenges.
Duties and responsibilities:
The Doctoral Fellow will be part of a small research team led by a Post-Doctoral Fellow affiliated with the OSRP. The team will work with other academics and staff members at CEU and at OSUN partner institutions on planning and implementing the initial activities of the Open Society Research Platform. The primary purpose of the Doctoral Fellowship is to undertake a comprehensive and systematic mapping and review of scholarly approaches and resources related to the concept of open society and contribute to the design of a platform that would serve as both a resource repository and a vehicle for engagement of scholars and wider public on the subject.
Specific tasks will include:
- collection, cataloguing and review of scholarly and other publications related to the concept of open society;
- establishing an annotated inventory of authors, publishers and research centers that have resources and programs dedicated to the study, analysis and public engagement on the subject of open society and related ideas and concepts;
- organizing and contributing to workshops, roundtables, colloquia, conferences and other relevant activities aimed at in-depth engagement in scholarly and public discussion;
- supporting the design and launch of an on-line platform dedicated to the access to and debate around the scholarly resources focused on open society;
- contributing to the project evaluation and planning for its expansion and design of program portfolio;
- active engagement with the research grantees supported by the platform.
Qualifications and skills:
The successful candidate will be an advanced doctoral student in social sciences, law or humanities, whose research is related to open society, democracy, human rights or other relevant subjects. The Fellow will demonstrate excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, mastery of relevant theories and research methods, have exemplary work discipline and self-organization and will work effectively individually as well as part of a team, with minimal supervision. Good familiarity with computer-based research techniques will be an advantage. The Doctoral Fellow is expected to have fluency in English and excellent communication skills. Ability to engage academically in other language(s) is an asset. It is strongly preferred that the Fellows’ own doctoral project resonates thematically and methodologically with the purpose and tasks of the Fellowship.
Compensation:
We offer a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, as well as a dynamic and international academic environment.
How to apply
To apply for the Fellowship, please submit:
- a CV (with a list of publications, if available)
- a motivation letter highlighting your relevant experience and ambitions and explaining interest in the program
- one recent English language published paper or manuscript that best represents your research.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a personal interview and requested to name two scholars who could supply recommendation letters.
Informal inquiries can be addressed to: Matyas Szabo, Senior Program Manager at YECHE, at
[email protected]
Interested candidates should send their complete application package to:
