    • Modular Doctoral Program
The Modular Doctoral Program (MDP) is designed for junior faculty teaching at select OSUN institutions in the Global South who are interested in pursuing modular studies for the degree of PhD in social sciences and humanities or the SJD degree in legal studies at the Central European University. The modular doctoral program offers students flexible enrolment that does not require continuous residence at a foreign campus and allows them to work on their dissertation while remaining in active academic positions at their home institutions. The program is divided into modules, some of which require the student’s presence at CEU (e.g. coursework modules), while others can be completed at a distance (e.g. fieldwork, dissertation write-up). Students maintain access to world-class academic resources at CEU and remain in active contact and consultation with their CEU advisors throughout their studies.

Program Details and Eligibility

Interested candidates must submit their applications for advertised CEU PhD programs through the designated application portal and will undergo competitive selection by the regular CEU PhD selection panels. If selected, they will be considered for a funding package which includes full tuition waiver and travel and stipend support for periods of residence at CEU, as well as funding for short-term visits to CEU for departmental conferences, comprehensive exam, and defense. Modular students are eligible for all forms of research support available to regular doctoral students at CEU, such as the doctoral research support grant or the write-up grant, on a competitive basis. The funding is available for up to six consecutive years, during which period the candidates are expected to complete their coursework and research project and defend their dissertation for the award of the CEU degree.
